Thoughts of Preacher John #3:

A strong meme may live eternal
In the hearts and minds of men

The medium changes but the work may endure if it is strong enough.

Homer's "Iliad" and "Odessey" both began as oral works (which is why when you read the original translation there are so many refrains - they both have a poetic / song structure) and were transfered to hard media by the Romans (I think) subsequent multiple translations thereof - over the last 2000 years or so - have no placed these works (or close derivatives thereof) into film, video, magnetic storage, DVD etc.

And if these new forms of storage were lost? You can bet the stories would return to the oral tradition they came from. See also Ray Bradbury's "Farhneit 451".
